Toddler tantrums: a supportive guide for mums and dads

Short read

Dealing with toddler tantrums can be one of the most challenging aspects of parenting. It’s important to understand that tantrums are a normal part of child development. Toddlers are trying to express themselves and often don’t have the words to convey their feelings, leading to frustration and outbursts.

Tantrums often occur because toddlers feel misunderstood or are unable to communicate their needs. Sometimes it can be because of jealousy. However common triggers include hunger, tiredness, overstimulation and the need for attention. Identifying these triggers can help parents anticipate and prevent potential tantrums.

Strategies for prevention

  • Keep a regular routine for meals, naps and bedtime to minimise hunger and tiredness.
  • Use simple words and phrases to communicate with your child.
  • Offer limited choices to give them a sense of control.
  • Ensure they have enough playtime and physical activity.

When a tantrum occurs:

  • Stay calm and don’t react with anger.
  • Acknowledge their feelings and try to understand the cause.
  • Offer comfort and reassurance.
  • If safe, sometimes ignoring the tantrum can be effective as it teaches that outbursts won’t get them what they want.

Once the tantrum has subsided:

  • Offer affection and comfort.
  • Discuss the behaviour calmly and teach them appropriate ways to express their emotions.
  • Praise them when they communicate well or calm down on their own.

Remember, consistency is key in both preventing and dealing with tantrums. With patience and understanding parents and nannies can help their toddlers learn to manage their emotions effectively.

It’s also worth noting that an autistic meltdown is different to a temper tantrum; a temper tantrum is usually a child’s method for getting what he/she wants. A meltdown, however, has no purpose and is beyond a child’s control.
